Kefir – December Product of the Month

Kefir has been consumed for centuries,  believed to originate in the northern Caucasus Mountains in Russia. The name Kefir comes from the Turkish word 'keyif', which means pleasurable state.  This refers to the feeling people get after consuming Kefir. Kefir is a combination of beneficial bacteria and yeasts which are added to milk at a warm temperature, creating a fermentation. Our Jersey milk Kefir has a tart, tangy flavour, creamy texture and a slight 'fizz' (a result of the fermented yeasts).Kefir is associated with a range of health benefits resulting from the high level of beneficial bacteria it contains, often referred to as probiotics.  Our Kefir has 9 different strains of probiotics which are closely associated with good gut health. 

Kefir can be enjoyed as a drink, blended into smoothies or shakes, used as a salad dressing or, if you want to get in touch with your European roots, you could try a classic Lithuanian Kefir Based Borscht. It should be no surprise that Kefir is our product of the month during a month of excess - Christmas Time! Give your gut health something to celebrate this Christmas with some delightful Kefir.
